Mission Bridge Rehabilitation – March Construction Update
Bridge Rehabilitation Update: What’s Happening Next?

Beginning on March 4, the orange construction hoarding walls on Mission Bridge will start to be dismantled. These walls allowed for critical repairs to be done inside the bridge while ensuring the safety of workers, but their removal does not indicate the bridge is reopening to traffic.
The project remains on track for substantial completion by winter 2025, with the reopening of Mission Bridge expected ahead of summer 2025. Here’s a look at what’s been completed and what’s still ahead.
Completed:
- Construction started (Spring 2024)
- Mission Road paving
- Retaining wall reconstruction
Upcoming milestones:
- Bridge backfill completion
- Bridge reopening to 2-way traffic
- East pathway completion
- Bridge paving
- West pathway completion
- Substantial completion
Construction activities are dependent on several factors. Timelines may change due to inclement weather, complexity, supply chain, and/or other unexpected circumstances.
Stay tuned for more updates via this newsletter and visit Mission Bridge Rehabilitation project page for the latest details. Thanks for your patience—we’re getting closer!
Construction Notice: Elbow Drive Periodic Lane Closures – Ongoing
Periodic lane closures are expected to continue until the end of April on Elbow Drive for the area and intersection of 4 Street S.W. and 26 Avenue S.W. Pedestrian and wheeling access to and over Mission Bridge will be maintained.
Work may happen during the following times (dependent on weather and other factors):
- Daytime Lane Closures
- Monday to Friday: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (off peak hours)
- Saturdays: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Nighttime Lane Closures
- Monday to Friday: 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
One of two eastbound lanes may be closed on Elbow Drive. Starting east of 5 Street S.W. and continue past the intersection of 4 Street S.W. and 26 Avenue S.W.
These periodic lane closures will help crew with concrete pouring work, dismantling the orange hoarding structure needed for repairing inside the bridge, backfill of the bridge, utility work and site deliveries.
Construction Notice: Water Services Work on Elbow Drive – March 7 to 9
From March 7 to March 9, The City of Calgary’s Water Services will be conducting fire hydrant valve repairs at the intersection of Elbow Drive and Garden Crescent (west of Mission Bridge). Two westbound lanes of Elbow Drive may be closed to complete this work.
Please be sure to follow all posted construction and detour signage in the area for your safety and that of construction crews.
Are we there yet? Your Guide to More Delightful Drives
Throughout the rehabilitation work on Mission Bridge, we’ve been looking for ways to improve Calgarians’ experience during their commutes through this part of the city. You might have seen us asking for your feedback, offering research opportunities, and trying experiments like the rafting detour animal spotting experience or the viewing window into the covered construction site.
We’re back with another prototype that we’d love for you to add to and try out. ‘Are we there yet?’ is a collection of resources, tips, and ideas for (hopefully) making your disrupted commutes just a bit better. We’ve based it on what we’ve heard from Calgarians that have contributed directly through our research. Check out the first draft of the guide here. And please provide suggestions and ideas for the next version here!
