Latest Development Updates – Your Help Needed

Latest developments…..

Despite positive movement and support from Mayor Farkas and Councillor Schmidt, the City administration continues to work toward significant increases of the role of 4th Street in the city’s major networks.

1. Street Lighting Removal

Administration is moving forward with a street lighting upgrade on 4th that is designed for major roadways.

It will happen very soon. The locations for the new lights have all been selected.

Residents paid for those historic lamps and they were very carefully installed to meet the roadway guidelines of a minor collector and local street within a neighbourhood.

2. Ward 8 map and roadway upgrades

Since the October election, they have increased the role of 4th in the citywide network at least four times:

– as part of the major transit network

– as a goods route (trucks, emergency vehicles, large buses, dangerous goods)

– as a major road in the road network on maps

– as a designated snow priority clearing route which allows emergency vehicles to move fast and freely through the community. The removal of traffic calming measures at the bridge has enabled this. We have never had emergency vehicles go through our neighbourhood before. They belong on Macleod Trail.

They would not make these kinds of upgrades in the middle of a community. None of these upgrades have been approved by Council.

These upgrades are included in the upcoming Calgary Plan, which has not been approved  by Council.

You can check the roadway maps here: https://www.calgary.ca/planning/city-building-program/city-building-program/the-calgary-plan.html

They are building a case to meet the requirements for high density development, transit oriented development which will ease the way for removal of restrictive covenants (as per Banff Trail decision)

Please contact Mayor Farkas and Councillor Schmidt asap to express concern about the removal of the historic street lamps on 4th and ask that Rideau Roxboro be restored to one community in city maps. It currently appears as the communities of Rideau Park and Roxboro. Neither of these communities exist.
